26 november 2012 12:25 pm the smallest butternut squash in the world we men are always being told that size isn't everything. but even so. after months of watering, feeding, weeding and love this was all the three (yes three) butternut squash plants could manage. pathetic isn't the word. small is. last year a canadian gardener called joel jarvis grew a 1,500lb squash . mine barely registered on the kitchen scales. it's been one of those years. roll on 2013. ad more: http://greenanswers.com/q/265257/food-agriculture/what-was-largest-butternut-squash-ever-recorded#ixzz2dkzlp0b6 the guinness world records website has a record for heaviest squash. on october 24, 2009 in ontario, canada, a squash weighed in at a whopping 1,236 lbs. read more: http://greenanswers.com/q/265257/food-agriculture/what-was-largest-butternut-squash-ever-recorded#ixzz2dkzlp0b6 november 26, 2012 | permalink | comments (0) share this article: facebook twitter google+ messenger linkedin digg it newsvine fark nowpublic reddit 16 november 2012 1:26 pm planting out raspberry canes... again at the end of last winter i planted 10 summer and 10 autumn raspberry canes. to say it wasn't a great year for raspberries is an understatement. only three of the summer canes grew, while not one of the autumn canes burst into healthy life. no shoots, no leaves, not a sausage. and certainly not a raspberry. the grand total from 20 canes was 12 raspberries over three months which is barely enough to fill a small bowl. i've discussed this failure before and i'm still unsure what went wrong. possibly the canes were duff. perhaps the manure was contaminated. maybe they were waterlogged, or starved of water. but there is no point crying over spolit fruit so last week i had a second attempt. this time i took great pains to ensure the canes were planted to the right depth and that they had plenty of manure and water. november is the best time of the year to plant bare rooted bushes, trees and fruit canes - it gives them a few weeks of milder weather to settle down before the winter kicks in. fingers are firmly crossed. at the same time, i also removed the netting from the top and front fruit cage for the winter and spring. any snow will settle on the netting and can bring it down. storing rolled up netting is easy. untangling and identifying netting at the start of the summer is the tricky bit so a good tip is to label the tied up bundles of net carefully. november 16, 2012 | permalink | comments (0) share this article: facebook twitter google+ messenger linkedin digg it newsvine fark nowpublic reddit 10 october 2012 7:19 pm chopping down asparagus ferns too early bother. you'd have thought that given the wealth of free information on the internet and in books, that the modern, well-read and loose-limbed allotment holder would be well informed and ready for action at all times. you would, of couse, be wrong. the other day as i passed the windswept asparagus bed, i vaguely recalled reading that you should cut down the ferns when they start turning yellow. it seemed plausible advice and a few of the ferns were an unsightly yellow round the edges. it was the work of a moment to have the stems trimmed to three inches. a little knowledge is of course a dangerous thing. and not least for the poor asparugus plant who was quietly enjoying a little october sunshine when i set about with the secateurs. if was only when i began to admire my handiwork (or massacre as an unkind family member put it) that i engaged my brain. surely, i thought, it would have been more sensible to chop them down once they had completely stopped growing for the year? after the plants had all turned completely yellow and brown. then next year's spears would get the benefit from every possible day of sunlight, water and nutrients. sure enough, checking in the books showed i'd chopped them down too soon, depriving the plants of a few week's growth. as i said at the start, bother. i can't imagine it's a serious mistake. but i notice that every other grower still has their asparagus ferns intact. i may be imagining it, but i detect a look of pity as they pass. i've learned that the only way to cope with a schoolboy error of this sort is to pretend it was a well-informed, deliberate decision based on the latest scientific advice. i've taken to walking passed my mutilated bed with a paternal, proud expression - which then turns to sorrow when i gaze on the neighbour's uncut asparagus. the expression i'm going for as i cast my eye over their ferns is a kind of 'i see you still do it the old way' look of mild contempt mixed with quiet bemusement. but it fools no one. least of all me. october 10, 2012 | permalink | comments (0) share this article: facebook twitter google+ messenger linkedin digg it newsvine fark nowpublic reddit 25 september 2012 11:44 am mildew on courgettes and pumpkins courgettes, pumpkins and marrows love water and will be welcoming the torrential downpours of the last few days. with luck, the september soaking will help combat the powdery mildew which has taken hold in the last few weeks. powdery mildew is a fungal disease that thrives on members of the squash and cucumber family, particularly when conditions are dry and the plants are stressed. it leaves patches of white dust on the leaves and stems and can kill the plants. there don't appear to be any effective treatments for the variety that enjoys courgettes, but it can be prevented with regular watering and mulching. it's important to remove infected leaves which can be safely composted. some gardeners recommend spraying infected plants with water and a dash of detergent. others suggest a mix of baking soda with water. sounds unlikely to be, but i'll give it a go. i suspect our courgettes and marrows are a little overcrowded, which won't have helped. and no doubt i've failed to water them as much as i should during the brief moments when the sun popped out in the last couple of months. more lessons for next year... september 25, 2012 | permalink | comments (0) share this article: facebook twitter google+ messenger linkedin digg it newsvine fark nowpublic reddit 18 september 2012 11:45 am two marrows, and two marrows, and two marrows you just need to turn your back on a courgette for a second and it turns into a monstrous marrow. to make matters worse, a pumpkin seed that i planted in the spring in good faith has mutated into a sprawling plant that is producing a bounty of green-marrow-like-squash-things.
